The UM-101 mercury-free sphygmomanometer opens up a completely new era of professional blood pressure measurement. In 1905, Dr. Nikolai S. Korotkov introduced his theory of blood pressure measurement using the Riva-Rocci mercury monitor. Since then, blood pressure measurement using the mercury column has been reigned as the gold standard of blood pressure measurement, and his method known as the "Korotkov method" or "auscultatory method" is used for daily blood pressure monitoring by healthcare professionals worldwide.
Recently, awareness of the issue of environmental conservation has been increasing and the use of mercury has become a worldwide concern. Mercury is a toxic metal that can poison whole communities and remain in the local environment for many years creating serious health risks. Therefore, the banning of mercury is essential in order to maintain a clean and safe environment.
As a leading manufacturer of blood pressure monitors, A&D is responding to the call from the international medical community to ban the use of this toxic metal and has developed a new, highly advanced digital blood pressure monitor. The UM-101 was designed to be used as an alternative to the mercury column, while at the same time preserving the local environment and creating an easy-to-use product for hospital personnel.

Auscultatory Blood Pressure Measurement Without Mercury
The UM-101 inherits the appearance of conventional mercury columns so there is no confusion even if you are using the device for the first time. The only difference is that the user has to press the ON/OFF button to activate the unit before commencing BP measurement. No liquid is used in this device and therefore handling it is easier than its counterparts. The problem of a slow mercury response, due to clogging of the filter in the glass tube, does not exist because the UM-101 effortlessly delivers quick and easy-to-read digital results.
Pressure Level Marker for Useful Reminders
Thanks to digital technology, the UM-101 has an extra button other than the ON/OFF button. By pressing this button (MARK), you can easily put markers on the digital bar to memorize the measured pressure. Up to five markers can be shown within one reading. The pressure level, systolic value and diastolic value are examples of ideal points to highlight and refer to yourself or show to someone else.
Digital Read Out for Pulse Rate
The UM-101 is equipped with a small numerical display at the base of the digital column. This numerical display shows the pressure itself while it is increasing or decreasing. When a measurement is completed (below 20mmHg). the patient’s pulse rate is displayed automatically. The time-saving function is very practical because the patient’s blood pressure and pulse rate are measured simultaneously.
Adjustable Display Column for Easier Analysis of Results
Unlike a mercury column, you can adjust the UM-101 digital column to your prefered position by choosing from 4 different angles (ranging from 0 to 90 degrees). There is no need for you to twist yur head or lean over to view your readings! You can even put the UM-101 on a patient’s bed and take an accurate measurement after adjusting the column to your selected angle. (The device does not have to be placed on a flat surface.)
