Joint 9th Philippine Society of Hypertension & Philippine Lipid Society Convention

Manila, Philippines -- A&D Digital BP Devices was officially launched and introduced by
Wellness PRO Incorporated to the general public and the medical community in the recently concluded Joint 9th Philippine
Society of Hypertension - Philippine Lipid Society Convention held at Edsa Shangri-la last February 5 to 7, 2004.
A&D Digital BP Devices is manufactured by Tokyo based A&D Company Limited. Wellness PRO Incorporated is the official and exclusive Philippine distributor of A&D Medical Company Limited of Tokyo, Japan in the Philippines.
Over 1100 delegates joined the convention during its 3 days. Some 75% of these are prescribing doctors - country's top cardiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, nephrologists, and heads of leading hospitals. These are the medical doctors dealing extensively with the implications of hypertension of their patients.
WellnessPRO booth featured only A&D items; namely UA767, UA767+, UA779, and UA787. Booth visitors were given every opportunity to examine the A&D devices, ask questions, try to get the BP themselves, to purchase units, and to set appointment for our Wellness Executives to visit them in their clinics. Over 500 visitors passed by our booth.
WellnessPRO, specific to the convention only, put on offer UA787X. This model has the same features as the UA787, but instead of 1 unit of semi-hard E cuff included was 1 unit soft Cuff for Regular Size Arm and another soft cuff for XL Large Size. The doctors were impressed by this modification. They liked the idea so much that they were even considering asking for a Pediatric Cuff just to complete the range. Of interest too for them is the IHB feature of UA767+ and UA787.
They requested that they be furnished with Dr. Cabral's abstract and the abstracts of the other studies to date.
At 7:30 am of February 6, 2004, WellnessPRO opened the sponsored symposium, entitled - "Digital BP Devices Demystified", as lead by Dr. Esperanza Icasas-Cabral, President of the Philippine Society of Hypertension. Over 150 Doctors, collectively involving a patient base of over 7,000 active and duly aware hypertensive cases, participated in the symposium. Right before and after the symposium, the doctor- attendees took the opportunity to examine the items up close, and to try it for themselves.
The symposium was impressive in terms of quantity and quality of attendees. We definitely had the Key Opinion Leaders of the Cardiology World in the Philippines in that 1 room examining closely the value of having A&D BP monitors in the lives of their patients for purposes of optimal hypertension management.
Mr. Joseph Chan Juan, General Manager of WellnessPRO acted as Emcee. The session opened with an announcement to the audience that WellnessPRO and A&D seek to work in partnership with all Medical Doctors in the vision, hope and task of managing better Hypertension in the country by seeking out the benefits of Home BP Monitoring with the use of reliable tool such as A&D.
Dr. Esperanza Cabral related the results of her validation tests of UA767+ and UA787, conducted in the country's super top tier hospital - Makati Medical Center. She explained how the use of (supposedly accurate) digital Blood Pressure Devices can indeed be relevant in this day and age, especially in light of how it can minimize the biases pertinent to human operation of a mercurial device (e.g. terminal digit bias, white coat hypertension, vision / hearing acuity deficiencies, etc.).
She noted that the Protocol used for the clinical validation was according to the European Society of Hypertension International Protocol for Validation of Blood Pressure Measuring Devices for Adults. Her charts showed how the A&D device BP readings were in conformity with same occasion mercurial readings. She concluded that the A&D UA767+ and UA787 models are indeed reliable for both patients and doctors to use.
Dr. Cabral's lecture was followed by a Question & Answer session, as opened by our panel of 3 reactors; namely, Dr. Enrique Del Fuerte, Dr. Jim Villanueva, and Dr. Joefil Acosta. The comments, questions & remarks of these 3 gentlemen-doctors, were followed by reactions from the floor, for Dr. Cabral or Mr. Chan Juan to clarify.
In the process, Dr. Cabral clarified, among many points, the following -
• that the readings during the validation test were made by qualified blood pressure takers,
• that taking of BP with the use of the A&D Digital Device require just the same patient protocol in
terms of patient set up as the mercurial as noted by the American Heart Association,
• that digital BP devices must be looked into closely as possible alternative to the mercurial even as the
Europeans and the American doctors differ in how they are proceeding with the transition,
• that Doctors must be ready to let go of some of the mystique they enjoy in the eyes of the patient as they
use mercurial devices if only because there are solid benefits to be had for both patient and doctor with
reliable home BP monitoring,
• That with AAMI, BHS, and EHS in the picture, digital BP devices, of the likes of A&D, must now be looked into
closely, despite of previous ill-experience with other brands.
In the same event, Mr. Joseph Chan Juan clarified to the Doctor audience the following points, among others, -
• That a service center will indeed be set up within the year,
• That the product is Designed & Engineered in Japan, and that A&D Company Limited has been in the
business of manufacturing A&D Digital Devices, among others, for over 20 years now,
• That these items should still be handled with care, similar to cellular phones,
• That WellnessPRO has the capability to deliver to anywhere in the country and to any clinic.
